Boat ladders are a frequent source of minor incidents, whether one is a diver or a simple boater. Here are some basic rules to avoid them and fully enjoy your outings at sea.
Basic precautions before and after diving
Most divers know the basic rules: before jumping into the water, check that there is no one below. Similarly, when coming back up, ensure that no diver is right behind you.
During the briefing, pay attention to instructions regarding the equipment to remove before climbing back onboard. These instructions vary depending on the boat and the diving site.

H Ladders vs. T Ladders: Adapt your technique
Not all ladders are the same. H models often require removing the fins, unlike T ladders, which are more convenient for keeping your gear on.
The overlooked danger: Protecting your hands and fingers
An often overlooked aspect is the prevention of hand and finger injuries when using the ladder. The state of the sea can complicate the task, especially with mobile and folding ladders.
Understanding the mechanism of mobile ladders
These ladders are generally fixed by a hinge, allowing them to follow the movements of the swell. This system does not allow locking, so the ladder moves constantly.
The ladder: A potentially dangerous « nutcracker »
Imagine the ladder as a nutcracker. When the ladder rises, you « open » the nutcracker. But when descending, be careful not to trap your hands or fingers between the moving parts. The exerted pressure could cause serious injuries.
Tips for climbing safely
Be extremely careful about the placement of your hands, especially in rough seas. Dive centers are encouraged to assess risks and choose ladders as safe as possible.
Mind your head!
Although rarer, head injuries are possible. In heavy swells, the ladder can rise and fall abruptly. Avoid being underneath it at that moment, even if the current pushes you there. Never surface too close to the ladder.
