An Anchored Passion

Living in the Var for 17 years and a diver for about ten years, I always have my camera at hand. My pleasure is to capture, through my images, memories of what amazes me underwater. It is with enthusiasm that I enrolled, as an assistant, in the first edition of the Varoise Underwater Photo Meetings, which took place last September.

A Dive into the Port-Cros National Park

The Port-Cros National Park, near the Island of Levant, hosts this unprecedented event. It is a joy for me, as it’s my very first dive in this area of the park. The competition is held in teams of two: a photographer and an assistant. This format reassures me; I didn’t feel ready to compete alone. My partner is an experienced photographer friend with whom I dive regularly. His presence provides advice and reassurance.

Stress and Impatience at the Rendezvous

On the day of the contest, we meet at the wharf of the port of Hyères, near the harbor master’s office, to take the shuttle to the island of Port-Cros. A dive boat then takes us to the dive site. Yann and I arrive a little early to enjoy a coffee and ease my last worries. I feel a mix of impatience and stress. On the dock, we meet the other teams, totaling fourteen. The participants are equipped with various equipment, ranging from simple phones to high-level cameras, reflecting the diverse skills of the divers. After a quick attendance check, we board for a calm crossing.
