We presented to you the behind the scenes of the filming in issue #7 of Dive in! : the digital series, directed by Jean-François Julian, has been available since April 14 on the Studio+ app. The first fiction highlighting freediving since The Big Blue mixes a well-crafted plot with magnificent underwater images.
It was during the 19th diving show, early January in Paris, that the first episode of this series was projected. On this occasion, we met the main actress, the Italian Caterina Murino (known notably for her role as a ‘James Bond girl’ in the movie Casino Royal). She told us about this experience that deeply marked her:
Shot in Monaco in June 2016, this international mini-series of 10 episodes of 10 minutes alternates dialogues in English, Italian, and French. Besides Caterina Murino, it features renowned actors: Ornella Muti, Henry Davis, Byron Gibson, Pauline Lefèvre, Stomy Bugsy but also freediving champions such as Pierre Frolla who holds one of the main roles or Guillaume Néry, Stéphane Tourreau, and Rémy Dubern who make appearances or were present during the filming on and underwater.
The plot of Deep focuses on the character of Sofia, played by Caterina Murino, who tragically loses her twin brother Matt (Pierre Frolla) during the world freediving championships in the open sea. In memory of her brother, to clear his honor and to get closer to him in some way, she decides to take up freediving and attempt to break a record. Drama, action, flashbacks, a part of mystery and romance pace this fiction with a breathless suspense.
Deep has the particularity of having been filmed in a vertical format, ideal for the many underwater freediving images on line, in-depth but also especially a format adapted to small screens (smartphones and tablets). With the short format and the numerous cliffhangers (end of an episode that leaves an unbearable suspense for the viewer), this new generation of series targets a digitally-oriented audience, able to watch the episodes at any time on their smartphone.
