Including a diver in your underwater photos adds scale and an extra dimension to your images. It not only helps capture memories of your dive group but also adds a human touch to your art. However, mastering this task isn’t always as straightforward as it seems! Here are some practical tips for capturing your diving companions, especially if they’re only around for a cruise or a short stay.

1. Use the right equipment and lens

Opt for a wide-angle lens, ideally 20 mm or less for reflex and mirrorless cameras. For compacts, an optical accessory is recommended. Beware of distortion with fish-eye type lenses! The closer you get to your subject, the less water there is, which will improve lighting.

2. Visual scale

A diver’s silhouette serves as a reference: it sets the context, whether in relation to a shipwreck or a shark. For better composition, wait until the diver is in profile or slightly turned towards you. Be mindful of their fin movement to avoid an unflattering pose.
