Beginning of the adventure

Eight o’clock in the morning, Roseau port, the capital of Dominica. It’s time to leave. The day looks long, with a navigation program planned for eight to ten hours at sea to maximize encounters. The guide quickly deploys the hydrophones, allowing for the detection of cetaceans several miles away.

This avoids long navigations and reduces noise pollution that could affect resident populations. The surrounding waters are home to a multitude of other species, and the hydrophones allow the immediate recognition of the characteristic sounds of sperm whales and the assessment of the distance to the spotted group. Generally, it is not necessary to go very far, and patience is often rewarded in less than three-quarters of an hour, often without needing to leave the shores. The underwater topography allows quick access to the great trench, plunging nearly 2000 meters deep, an ideal playground for this species.
