On Sunday, April 17th, 2016 (8:30 AM to 7:00 PM), head to the university pool at La Doua in Lyon for the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regional championship of sport diving in a pool (or PSP), organized by GLUP (Groupe Lyonnais Universitaire de Plongée).

But what is PSP? It is a discipline that emerged in Spain in the 2000s. It combines sportiness with technical diving to offer fun and physical trials that allow divers to develop their underwater agility. Whether divers are novices, experienced, or advanced, sport diving allows them to enhance their underwater agility and mastery of the scuba equipment, enabling them to compete with other divers in competitions that emphasize camaraderie. In France, the discipline has been recognized since 2011 by the FFESSM (French Federation of Underwater Studies and Sports), allowing it to gain momentum and see its number of practitioners increase year after year.

PSP is practiced from the first level of diving. The equipment consists of a scuba diving gear (including a diving tank, a regulator, and a buoyancy compensator) as in « classic » diving and can be supplemented by a snorkel depending on the events.

Besides camaraderie, sport diving in a pool highlights equality thanks notably to the organization of mixed events. Indeed, during the 4 x 50 meters relay, teams must be composed equally, with 2 women and 2 men.

The competition schedule

Sport divers will be able to take part in 5 different events according to the established schedule:Sunday morning:• The 25 meters 6 kg emergence: individual event, men and women (qualifying for the French championship). The event consists of an underwater displacement over a distance of 23 or 48 meters, followed by the emergence of a 6 kg object only with the help of a buoy, as quickly as possible.
• The 50 meters octopus: pair event, men, women, and mixed. It requires a timed underwater displacement in pairs during which the divers use a single tank.

Sunday afternoon:• The 100 meters immersion: individual event, men and women. Like in swimming, it’s a timed race but carried out with scuba equipment and only underwater movement is allowed.
• The 4×50 meters relay: mixed team event. It is a classic relay where the 4 divers of a team must pass a baton as quickly as possible over the distance to be covered, all while submerged.
• The Mascot relay: team event, invented by the GLUP members. Relay with fins, mask, and snorkel aiming to finish on a note of camaraderie around an event using each club’s mascot as the baton.

An eco-friendly event

GLUP is committed to making the meeting eco-friendly. Each participant will be made aware of the use of materials from renewable manufacturing: ecocup (100% ecological, durable, reusable, and recyclable cups), waste sorting,…
