Blowing out 90 candles: the world’s oldest diving equipment brand celebrates its anniversary in Marseille, the birthplace of its creation.

In 1934, in Marseille, Georges Beuchat created the world’s very first brand of diving and spearfishing equipment. Over the decades, the company would make its mark on the history and evolution of aquatic sports thanks to its innovative and iconic equipment: the first isothermal diving suit, the Super Compensator mask, JetFin fins, the Focea Comfort suit, and the Maxlux S mask.

Marseille, cradle of Beuchat

For its 90th anniversary, Beuchat chose to return to its roots by celebrating this milestone in the Sormiou cove in Marseille. This exceptional site, a witness to the brand’s history, is also where Georges Beuchat tested his inventions, surrounded by his family and friends, including the famous diver Albert Falco. A strong symbol to remind of Beuchat’s Mediterranean roots, a legacy that endures in the brand’s DNA. Thus, nine decades later, this same cove hosted this grand evening in honor of this beautiful adventure.

Honored guests

Among the guests invited by Christophe Magnat, director of Beuchat, were employees, past and present, alongside international teams (Spanish, Italian, German). Three brand ambassadors also featured among the honored guests: the freediver and world record holder Stéphane Mifsud, the underwater photographer Guillaume Ruoppolo, and the spearfisher and founder of Pêcheurs du cœur, Mathieu Ferreira. The event was also marked by the presence of the daughter and granddaughter of Georges Beuchat, guardians of this family heritage and the pioneering spirit of the brand.

An international brand rooted in Marseille

Although deeply attached to Marseille, Beuchat has managed to expand internationally, with a presence in more than 90 countries today. In 1961, the brand even received the Export Oscar, an award symbolizing the success of its international strategy. From the 1990s, with the slogan ‘All Over the World,’ it consolidated its global reputation while remaining true to its Mediterranean identity.

At 90 years old, Beuchat continues to uphold a strong mission: to live and preserve the sea. This philosophy guides its actions and future development, with the ambition to inspire present and future generations to explore the sea while respecting it.
