CORAL REEFS, HEART OF THE OCEAN

Coral reefs, heart of the ocean is the result of the collaboration between actor-director Lambert Wilson, researcher Serge Planes, and underwater photographer Alexis Rosenfeld. To share the stories of these extraordinary places of life, each author chose a series of photographs taken by Alexis Rosenfeld. The tales of these adventures are told through the sensitivity and commitment of Lambert Wilson, the precise and rigorous perspective of Serge Planes, and through the prism of the emotional moment lived by Alexis Rosenfeld. For each selected photo, a complementary scientific caption is offered at the end of the book. The goal of this book is to take you into the depths of underwater life with these “three perspectives for the ocean.” Visit a true “marker of our planet,” as beautiful as it is revealing concerning the health of ecosystems.

EXCERPTS

“ To be reincarnated as a Manta Ray, like a Golden Eagle for that matter. Flying, man’s dream, gliding effortlessly, silently, without a predator, except for a rare shark that would nibble a piece of our wing, but we would flee faster than him. Without a predator… except Man, always him, who sells our gills on Chinese markets. The world, above the water’s surface, is truly inhabited by the most dangerous creatures…“ Lambert Wilson

« White as a symbol of virginity for man, white as a symbol of impending death for coral, man continually tries to understand with a very skeptical eye.. » Serge Planes

.

« I remember this coral garden hidden behind Taravai, a small island lost at the far east of Polynesia. I had spotted the spot a few days before and was waiting for the right time for the light to create the perfect ambiance. I had expressly asked the two freediving friends who accompanied me to stay well behind me. When I saw Mahé enter the frame, I was furious, yelling into my regulator, he heard nothing. The next second, he inadvertently descended to precisely the right place and allowed me to take this photo.. » Alexis Rosenfeld

CONTRIBUTION

In publishing this book, it seemed evident and important to the authors to contribute to an action. 5% of the sales of this work will be donated to the Shark Observatory of Polynesia (ORP).

Founded in 2011, the Shark Observatory of Polynesia (ORP) is an association under the 1901 French law, whose primary objective is to gather all observations of the various species of sharks and rays present in French Polynesia, made by sea users, enthusiasts, sailors, fishers, divers, etc. Over 8 years, approximately 16,000 observation forms have been collected. All the information from these observations are compiled to estimate population stocks, map species distribution, and monitor the evolution of these different island populations over the long term. This work, carried out in collaboration with the Island Research Center and Environment Observation (CRIOBE) and the MantaTrust association, serves both scientists and enthusiasts who wish to encounter these animals in Polynesian waters. Alongside this work, the ORP promotes the image of Polynesian sharks beyond the territory, develops educational tools, and raises awareness among political leaders and the general public about the importance of these animals for the health of our coral reefs.
