At the extreme north of the island, the Marine Natural Park of Cap Corse and the Agriate stretches over 6,830 km² and unfolds a coastline of 225 km. This vast protected area notably houses the Finochjarole Islands Nature Reserve, located east of the cape, and stands out for its exceptional habitats.

A Strategic Delimitation for Protection

« The delimitation of the park « , explains Madeleine Cancemi, its director,  » whose creation is part of the strategy voted by the Corsican Assembly, was of course made based on the major interest habitats found in the area « . This targeted approach allows conservation efforts to be focused where they are most needed.

The Posidonia Meadow: A Key Ecosystem

Among these priority habitats, the Posidonia meadow holds a prime position, covering nearly 10,000 hectares. «  It is particularly extensive, in good health « , specifies Madeleine Cancemi. The 2020 decree, which regulates the anchoring of vessels over 24 meters (see Dive! Mediterranean special issue), marked a significant advance, especially as it was favorably received by the large yachting community, resulting in a notable reduction in anchorage.

The Wealth of Coralligenous Beds

The coralligenous beds, particularly abundant around the shallows of Centuri, off the western coast of Cap Corse, constitute another significant habitat. According to Madeleine Cancemi, purple gorgonians, located at greater depths than in continental waters, have withstood recent marine heatwaves.
