Fiji, an archipelago of 333 islands, offers a diverse diving experience. Cruises, various accommodations (from homestays to luxury resorts with dive centers), the options are vast. Some islands are known for manta rays, others for turtles or their coral gardens. Beqa Island, our destination, is famous for its shark encounters, particularly the bull sharks of Beqa Lagoon.
Beqa Island: A unique spot for shark enthusiasts
Located south of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island, Beqa Island is easily accessible via the international airports of Nadi (to the west) and Suva (the capital, to the southeast). After a journey from Suva, you’ll reach the hotels where dives begin. These take place in a marine reserve between the two islands, 13 km apart. While accommodation on Beqa Island is possible, Pacific Harbour offers more dive center choices. We opted for The Pearl hotel and the Aqua-Trek center, offering two-dive trips in the morning. In the afternoon, trips are possible depending on demand and weather. In October, afternoon winds may be a hindrance, and shore diving is limited by low visibility due to nearby rivers.
