Since my teenage years, I have been passionate about diving and coral reefs. This passion was strengthened during a long stay in Martinique, a two-year experience in direct contact with marine biodiversity. It was in this dynamic that I discovered the association Coral Guardian by participating in their ‘Adopt a Coral’ initiative. Captivated by their on-the-ground commitment, I felt a deep desire to go beyond mere financial support and become an active participant in protecting reef ecosystems myself. Volunteering as an eco-volunteer with Coral Guardian was an opportunity for me to give meaning to my endeavor and experience a powerful human and cultural adventure.

First steps in Indonesia: cultural immersion and initial observations

It was with my wife that I headed to Indonesia, eager to dive into the ambiance of this fascinating country, meet its fishing communities, and explore its coral-rich depths, among the most bountiful in the world. Our arrival in Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores at the foot of the famous Komodo National Park, immediately sets the tone.

Upon landing, we walk through the village’s main market and, drawn by the scents from the seaside restaurants, savor a fresh local fish. The scene is both calming and inspiring: before us, a panoramic view of the harbor, a mix of majestic sailboats and simple fishing boats. In the distance, the turquoise sea stretches out, inviting exploration.

This moment immediately provokes a first reflection: tasting this fish from admirable marine depths, I realize the importance of fishing for local inhabitants and the significance of the mission we were about to embark on with Coral Guardian.
