Underwater photographer, are you looking to enhance your shots? Integrating a diver into your compositions adds a narrative dimension, visual scale, and a human presence to the aquatic immersion. Whether it’s a mysterious silhouette or a detailed portrait, the diver tells a story.
If you’re lucky enough to regularly dive with a buddy, equipped with a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of underwater landscapes, majestic wrecks, and shimmering schools of fish, then this article is for you. How to persuade your partner to pose for the camera? The promise of shared memories, exceptional photos to show their loved ones, is generally a convincing argument.
Integrating a diver offers a scale, a unique perspective, and allows capturing the interaction between man and his environment. Imagine the story you wish to tell, the encounter you want to immortalize.
Underwater Shooting Tips
Mastering the Silhouette
The silhouette is an excellent starting point. Easy to achieve, it doesn’t require complex lighting. Position your buddy in the foreground or facing the sun. It provides a scale, draws the eye, and can even become a bright spot if the diver is equipped with a light.
Frame the Gaze Space
Avoid placing the diver at the edge of the frame. Ask them to swim slowly towards you, arms relaxed, legs straight or slightly bent. Wait for the ideal position to shoot.
