Dubnik and Its Ancient Opal Mines
Nestled in the southwest of Slovakia, the small town of Dubnik harbors ancient opal mines, partially submerged. Over time, the flooded galleries have created underwater landscapes with enchanting shapes and colors. According to legend, one of them hides a treasure, lost for 175 years.

A Fascinating Story
The adventure began in 1845 when Solomon Johann Nepomuk Goldschmidt, a Viennese jeweler, won the Dubník opal mines at auction. In 1848, a revolution shook Europe, and Vienna was invaded by the military. Fearing for his wealth, Goldschmidt chose to hide it in the Dubník mines, in the Schlamm shaft. Unfortunately, he died shortly afterwards, taking the secret of the treasure’s location with him. Although mining operations ceased in 1922, the myth of the treasure continues to captivate treasure hunters’ imaginations. While the dry zones are being explored, some areas have not been investigated in over a century.
