Every summer, a gathering of porbeagle sharks intrigues off the coast of Trégor, in Côtes-d’Armor. Despite increasing sightings, the reasons for their presence remain unclear. In September, APECS* launched a survey and tagging mission to shed light on this mystery.

The LAMNA Project: Understanding Gatherings
“The LAMNA project, initiated in 2020, was born from a simple observation: the increase in sighting reports by sea users, mainly between Trégor and Goëlo,” explains Eric Stéphan, coordinator of the association. “Is it due to the widespread use of smartphones, or a real increase in the shark population? We do not know. Sightings are frequent, close to the coast, and we wish to address them.”
Last September, the team was hard at work. Eric Stéphan, Nastasia Celle, project manager, and Sandrine Serre, PhD student on the species, collaborated with volunteers from the association and local fishermen, whose expertise was crucial for capture.
