The ocean depths are home to an incredible diversity of predators, each having developed unique hunting strategies. Fish, mollusks, crustaceans… All compete in ingenuity to capture their prey. Some rely on patience, others on speed, and others still on opportunism.

The challenge? Survival! To thrive, marine animals must optimize their energy while ensuring a constant supply of food. Their hunting techniques are therefore finely tuned to their diet (piscivorous, planktonophagous, omnivorous), the size and type of prey (mobile, fixed, with or without a shell). Let’s discover together some of these fascinating methods.
Ambush hunting: the art of patience
Many benthic fish excel in the art of ambush hunting. Camouflaged on the seabed, they patiently wait for an unsuspecting prey to pass by.
- The anglerfish ( Lophius piscatorius ): Uncontested master of concealment, this motionless fish waves its illicium (a lure that mimics prey) to attract curious fish before engulfing them in one gulp. Others, such as frogfish (Antennatus coccineus) or the stargazer, also use this technique with lures mimicking shrimp or worms.

The brown grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) : Well known to divers, this predator hides in its « hole » and pounces on its prey when it’s within reach. Scorpionfish, weeverfish, and moray eels (Muraena helena) adopt a similar strategy.
