A Childhood Cradled by Water
The sea has always been present in Martin Colognoli’s life. Originally from Salon-de-Provence, he spent many moments in Marseille, where water shaped his childhood. His earliest marine memories date back to when he was six years old, following his cousin while free diving, floating on a windsurf board with a mask on his face. This moment marked the beginning of his passion for the underwater world.
An Academic Path Focused on the Marine Environment
Martin started with studies in aquaculture, which led him to discover scuba diving at the age of 18. Fascinated by aquatic life, both in freshwater and at sea, he pursued a master’s degree in marine ecology in Montpellier. It was during an internship in Sydney, Australia, that he developed a particular interest in corals.

A Revelatory Professional Experience
His first job took him to Indonesia, to a farm exporting corals and fish for aquariums. Although some corals were farmed, all the fish were taken from their natural habitat. This experience led him to reflect on his actions, which did not align with his vision of respecting living beings. However, it also allowed him to acquire essential knowledge about coral cultivation, which later served him in founding Coral Guardian.
