Saint-Malo, the famous corsair city, represents a grail for many underwater archaeologists. The quite strong current and multiple coastal reefs have sent numerous ships to the depths along with their stories… In this rich historical context, the association for the development of research in maritime archaeology (ADRAMAR) and the Saint-Malo Plongée Émeraude center (SMPE) propose a set of activities to introduce younger audiences (from 8 years old) to underwater archaeology. This is a comprehensive project that combines culture and heritage with a sporting practice, keeping the underwater archaeological richness of Saint-Malo as the guiding thread.Exhibition « To the boarding! Corsairs between myths and reality »From August 10 to 18, the exhibition « To the boarding! Corsairs between myths and reality » offers a cross perspective on the myth of the corsair through the eyes of the underwater archaeologist, the archivist, and the comic artist Patrice Pellerin, author of the series The Sparrowhawk. Based on the underwater excavations of the corsair shipwrecks of La Natière that took place in Saint-Malo, it allows for a unique discovery of the privateering war in the 18th century, naval operations conducted by corsairs, between fiction and reality. It was designed in 2012 by the Departmental Archives of Ille-et-Vilaine in partnership with the General Council of Ille-et-Vilaine, the Directorate of Archives and Heritage, ADRAMAR, the Saint-Malo museum, the DRASSM (Ministry of Culture and Communication).
Featuring explanatory panels, photo frames, boards by Patrice Pellerin, the exhibition will allow visitors to go back in time. The excavations at La Natière indeed concerned two wrecks, the Dauphine and the Aimable Grenot, wrecked in 1704 and 1749 in the access channel to the port of Saint-Malo.Practical info: from August 10 to 18 at the Maison de Quartier de la Découverte, 13 bis Rue du Pérou, 35400 Saint-Malo.Workshops and visits related to the exhibitionIn parallel with the exhibition, ADRAMAR offers guided tours of its research vessel specialized in maritime archaeology, the Hermine Brittany, and a workshop immersing in the world of privateering through the archaeological site of La Natière shipwrecks. Around a reconstructed excavation square and archaeological objects, the investigation invites to recreate life aboard the corsair frigates of the 18th century.
