The Saint-Malo Diving Émeraude center (SMPE) was founded over 20 years ago from a meeting between three ‘corsairs’: Emmanuel Feige, a history professor and doctor of archaeology, Denis Douillez, an offshore racing skipper and diving instructor, and Alain Cabioch, a professional diving instructor with degrees in biology and marine ecology. Today, the diving school, offering training in all disciplines (air, mixed gases, rebreather, free diving, snorkel hiking), is very successful with approximately 10,000 dives per year.

Particularly committed to raising awareness of the underwater environment, the club, in partnership with the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the University of Rennes, initiated the implementation of the first and only hyperbaric underwater trails in France. This is a rare opportunity to observe a rich fixed fauna, numerous fish as well as abalones, scallops, and cuttlefish. And what about life on the wrecks! While seasoned divers visit the ‘public housing’ for congers in the boilers of V208 Walter Darré and Hinrich Hey, beginners gather on the Fetiar, an English steamer resting upright on the seabed in excellent condition. In practice
