At the beginning of 2023, the Gombessa expeditions team joined forces with the Mokarran Protection Society to initiate the program Tamataroa. Last December, they all returned to the immense atoll to continue the ambitious scientific protocols of the project while starting the production of a film. This film is in keeping with the spirit of expeditions led by Laurent Ballesta, combining adventure, scientific discoveries, and stunning images.

Shared Objectives

Antonin Guilbert, project leader of this collaboration, is also a member of the Mokarran Protection Society. This affiliation strengthens their shared goal: the preservation of the lord of Tuamotu, the great hammerhead shark. The name Tamataroa, which means « great hammerhead shark » in Tahitian, aptly summarizes their mission.

> “Gombessa brings valuable scientific expertise,” emphasizes Antonin, “while MPS, thanks to its experience and local network, ensures the community engagement of the project.” This partnership is crucial, as each player plays an essential role in implementing this experimental scientific program based on five pillars: research, participatory science, cooperation with stakeholders, awareness, and promotion of local culture.
