To survive and adapt, that is the essence of the tadpole, this amphibian that sometimes thrives in clear water, sometimes in the muddiness of a swamp. Before diving into the incredible story of Gaby, it seems necessary to take a step back – especially for this new generation of divers, models of ecological consciousness, raised to the laws and good practices that today govern their passion.

To mention Gaby is inevitably to ruffle some feathers and shake a few well-established convictions. It’s diving into the beginnings of the heroic era of scuba diving, at a time when the DRASM (Department of Underwater Archaeological Research) did not yet exist, when red coral seemed literally to reach out to divers.

The golden age of underwater pioneers

The 1950s and 60s marked a real turning point for diving. Thanks to technical advances and the introduction of new equipment, the first private underwater work companies emerged: SOGETRAM in 1952 and then COMEX, founded in 1961.

This context gave birth to a generation of fearless enthusiasts, be they daredevils, pirates, or poachers, who seized the opportunity to legally practice their passion thanks to offshore projects. Gaby is one of these true adventurers and drew numerous tales from this life, both on land and underwater.

Marseille, Endoume: cradle of Gaby and the ‘tadpoles’

Origins forged in Endoume

Being born in 1944 in the neighborhood of Endoume, in Marseille, means growing up in an environment where resourcefulness and solidarity are rules of life. ‘All the greatest rogues come from Endoume!’ jokes Gaby, referencing the encounters with local ‘free spirits,’ judges, and the daily life of small jobs to bring home an income for the family.

Since he was very young, he’s honed his skills: collecting scrap metal to sell, imaginative petty thefts… A true school of life, softened by republican and paternal corrections, which lay the foundation for a code of honor adapted to the reality of the neighborhood.

First steps: from ‘Superior Kindergarten’ to CAP

With humor, Gaby recounts having attended ‘Superior Kindergarten first degree’ before obtaining at 16 a CAP in boilermaking-welding, and then marrying at 19. Already, the spirit of independence prevails: leaving the family nest to embark on an active life, that was the objective.

The tone is set from this first flight, when, at his wedding, Gaby’s mother says to her daughter-in-law: ‘You take the merchandise and there’s no need to bring it back!’

Birth of a passion for diving

Like many youngsters from the neighborhood, Gaby took his first steps in the sea: sea urchin fishing, hunting fish, all under the watchful eyes of adults – especially a group of poachers nicknamed ‘Les Crasseux.’ One of them gave him his first breath with a regulator, introducing him to the discreet sale of their catch to fishmongers.
