From September 9 to 11, the French stage of the preliminary circuit of the America’s Cup will be held in the heart of the Toulon harbor. Along the beaches of Mourillon, six ultra-fast catamarans (up to over 70 km/h) will compete for the right to participate in the final of this world-renowned nautical competition. The Toulon Provence Méditerranée agglomeration community wished to associate the Cité des sciences et de la mer with this event. The goal? To promote the research organizations of the maritime territory of Var. To achieve this, an « Abysses » evening will be organized in the Vauban auditorium of the Neptune Palace in Toulon, on Friday, September 9, starting at 7 PM (free entry).

On this occasion, the documentary « Abysses, the Alliances of the Depths » will be shown. Directed by Jean-Yves Collet, who has won several awards at international festivals, this film was shot off the Azores in 2014, aboard Ifremer’s flagship the Pourquoi pas ?While there’s just a step to go under the surface of a sea plied by the hull of a racing catamaran, the step proposed by « Abysses, the Alliances of the Depths » is significant. Indeed, it follows the journeys of the tele-operated robot Victor 6000 at more than 2000 meters deep. Atop the hydrothermal vents of the mid-Atlantic ridge, the robot conducts its investigation…
This evening in the heart of the ocean’s darkness will also be an opportunity to discover in images the KM3NeT/ORCA project, a new-generation neutrino detector, being installed in the Mediterranean at a depth of 2500 meters. These screenings will be followed by a public debate in the presence of scientific representatives, including those from Ifremer.
