At the Top of the Food Chain: An Essential Role

The great white shark, a formidable predator and actor in natural selection, is also a marine scavenger. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of oceanic ecosystems. Its hunting strategies vary depending on the regions and available prey.

An Eclectic Diet

The great white is among the species with the most diverse diet. It feeds on a wide range of prey: bony fish, sharks, rays, marine mammals, mollusks, crustaceans, marine turtles, and birds.

However, contrary to what one might think, its food consumption is relatively limited. An individual about 4.60 meters long can survive up to a month and a half after ingesting 30 kg of whale blubber or pinniped fat.

An Opportunistic Predator

The great white shark is an opportunistic predator. It adapts its diet based on the availability of species in a given area and period. When one prey becomes scarce, it shifts to another. An abundant or easy-to-capture species can thus become a dominant part of its diet.

Carcasses, notably those of large cetaceans, represent an ideal energy source. The shark optimizes their exploitation by targeting the fat, which is rich in energy.
