Author Portrait – Lambert Wilson

Portrait of Lambert Wilson, co-author of Coral Reefs alongside biologist Serge Planes and photographer Alexis Rosenfeld.

Particularly concerned about environmental causes, the actor-director has been involved with the NGO Greenpeace for about twenty years. Spending the summers of his childhood between Sanary-sur-Mer and Bandol, he discovered the joy of observing the seabed, exploring, contemplating. Portraying the role of Commander Cousteau in the cinema was a true revelation for him. First through learning scuba diving and then through the genuine encounter with that other world under the surface: the ocean.

« Coral reefs were a bit abstract to me. They were beautiful but scientifically
I was absolutely unaware. It was indeed through the meeting with Serge Planes,
that I discovered this biome at its most beautiful, its richest, its densest. I dived with
him in French Polynesia. All the photographs of Alexis I had seen, notably in
Papeete during an exhibition, I saw them with my own eyes for real. When the idea of this
book came up, I said yes we must show the public that coral reefs are markers just as there
exist markers for human diseases. They are extremely beautiful and extremely expressive markers, which indicate the health of ecosystems and humans must
get used to opening their eyes to the signs they send us.
