The Submerged Circus: A Technical Challenge Overcome

The world of circus has long been held back from aquatic feats, mainly due to the technical difficulties related to presenting underwater scenes. The lack of suitable structures in theaters and performance halls has long been a barrier.

Frédéri Vernier and Sébastien Davis-Van Gelder overcame this obstacle by innovating. Their performance is proof that « They didn’t know it was impossible, so they did it! », as Marcel Pagnol so aptly put it.

Meet the Artists: Frédéri Vernier and Sébastien Davis-Van Gelder

Based between Gard and Corrèze, Frédéri Vernier and Sébastien Davis-Van Gelder are two circus artists specialized in partner acrobatics. With over ten years of experience in international companies, they excel in the art of defying gravity.

  • Their routine: Twirling, balancing in complex positions, tossing and catching their partners.
  • Their challenge: Playing with the limits of the human body, both physically and mentally, demanding concentration, adaptation, and proprioception.

Trained at the same circus school, their meeting was an obvious choice. Sébastien, Franco-American, grew up in the marine world thanks to his marine biologist mother and his environmental engineer father passionate about diving. After a near-drowning at the age of 4 in the Caribbean, he turned to competitive swimming before discovering the circus. Water is his element, as natural as solid ground.
