On December 1, 2024, an exceptional event took place off the coast of La Réunion. No less than 607 divers formed the longest underwater human chain in the world, thus breaking the previous record held by Indonesia.

It was at the Cape of La Houssaye, in the Bay of Saint-Paul, that this feat was accomplished. Participants held hands at 11 meters depth, forming a perfect line of 500 meters long, visible even from the air! This impressive performance, meticulously organized, was officially validated by a bailiff and will be recorded in the Guinness World Records.

A historical revenge for La Réunion

This world record holds special significance for the island of La Réunion. Indeed, it was here in 2013 that the very first record was set with 110 divers. Since then, the title had changed hands several times: it was won by Italian divers in 2015 (173 divers), then by the United States in 2018 (386 divers). Finally, in 2019, Indonesia set the bar at 570 divers.

The Réunion divers prepared extensively for this comeback. After an aborted attempt in 2023, they succeeded in mobilizing 607 participants on this December 1, 2024, thus reclaiming their title with flair.

A meticulously organized event

Such success is based on rigorous and large-scale organization. No less than 700 people were mobilized to orchestrate the event, along with over 30 boats to ensure safety on-site. 30 public and private partners also supported this ambitious project, demonstrating the enthusiasm it sparked on the island.

The site, carefully chosen, offered ideal conditions: shore-accessible entry and a sandy bottom, ensuring the preservation of the marine ecosystem. To facilitate coordination underwater, a guideline was installed to enable divers to position themselves precisely. The organizers, mindful of the environment, also ensured that no trace remained after the event, thus reinforcing their commitment to preserving the marine floors.

A spotlight on La Réunion

Beyond the sporting feat, this world record allowed La Réunion to be in the international spotlight. This unifying event, which brought together local and international divers, helps promote the island to the global diving community.

La Réunion, already renowned for its rich terrestrial and marine landscapes, once again confirms its attractiveness as a unique destination for diving enthusiasts.
