An impressive gathering

Off the coast of Monterey Bay in California, sunfish sometimes gather by the dozens. These majestic creatures take advantage of waters rich in plankton to feed and, at the same time, become prey to predators like sea lions, who primarily target juveniles.

The king of bony fish

With a weight reaching nearly two tons, the Mola mola is recognized as the heaviest bony fish in the world. Found in tropical and temperate waters across the globe, it is actually quite common. It is surprising that in the early to mid-90s, few images or videos of the Mola mola circulated, as underwater encounters were relatively rare. However, thanks to the increasing number of divers and boaters equipped with cameras and the increased exploration of their habitats, sightings have multiplied.

Photographer
To approach them closely, it is essential to do so slowly and calmly. If the animal senses the slightest threat and associates the diver with a predator, it immediately moves away. Conversely, if it feels safe, it allows the photographer ample opportunity to enjoy its presence.
