Capturing the mood with ambient light

Natural light is ideal for conveying the mysterious atmosphere of a wreck. For success, good visibility is essential. Including divers in the frame helps give a sense of scale.

  • Angle of view: Look for a characteristic angle of your subject.
  • Low angle shot: Be cautious of too pronounced backlighting.

Example: The bow of the « Grec », photographed by Dominique Barray in good visibility (1/80 s – f/8 – 800 Iso – 16 mm).

Black and white: a striking graphical rendering

Wrecks lend themselves beautifully to black and white, offering a striking graphical rendering. Avoid setting the camera directly to black and white, as the image may become dark and uniform, with a cyan tint.

  • Recommended method: Photograph in color (RGB mode) and convert during post-production using editing software.
  • Key retouches: Reduce the cyan tint and increase contrast before switching to black and white.

Example: The deck of the « Donator » after retouching in black & white (1/100 s – f/11 – 800 Iso – 16 mm).
