At the Heart of the Mayan Culture

The cenotes still echo the legends and pre-Columbian Mayan rites. In indigenous communities, they remain sacred places, imbued with spirituality and integrated into daily life. Here is the story of an extraordinary exploration.

Aboard a pickup truck loaded with diving gear, heading to Yucatán, neighboring Quintana Roo. Rick, my friend and cave diving instructor, accompanies me in this quest for an unexplored cenote. After two hours of driving, we reach a village near Valladolid, where Samuel, our contact, awaits us to guide us.

Initially, two porters were supposed to assist us, but it is ultimately a team of ten people, led by the village chief, who accompany us. Distributed among the pickup, an old Nissan Tsuru, and a few motorcycles, we set off on the adventure.

On-site, I inquire with the village chief about the distance and accessibility of the cenote. Samuel translates my questions into Mayan, as our host speaks only this language, reflecting the linguistic richness of the region where more than 6 million people still practice Mayan dialects.
