On October 14, off the coast of the Japanese island of Tokunoshima, at only 5 meters deep, Ocean Gaia was installed. This monumental piece by Jason deCaires Taylor weighs over 45 tons and spans 5.5 meters wide. It features the serene face, sculpted on a large scale, of the famous Japanese model Kiko Mizuhara. Ocean Gaia thus holds the title of the very first underwater sculpture ever installed in Japanese waters.
In the heart of the reef
Positioned in close proximity to the shore, Ocean Gaia seamlessly integrates into the fringing reef of Tokunoshima. The sculpture, carefully perforated with lateral openings, serves a dual role: a work of art to admire and a habitat for local marine life. These cavities on the edges invite fish, crustaceans, and corals to colonize the structure, transforming each dive into an artistic and ecological exploration.

The contours of the sculpture, with delicate whorls, recall the sand patterns created by the Japanese white-spotted pufferfish (Torquigener albomaculosus), an emblematic species of the region. Moreover, these swirling forms echo the rugged reliefs of the neighboring mountain range, blending art and nature.
Tokunoshima: a symbolic and inspiring site
Tokunoshima is renowned for the longevity of its inhabitants, a healthy lifestyle, and remarkable demographic vitality. Its unique geography, marked by a mountain range resembling the silhouette of a pregnant woman, enriches the symbolic dimension of the installation. Ocean Gaia thus becomes a true homage to renewal, fertility, and the deep connection between humans and the sea. Faced with the exodus of younger generations to big cities, this new sculpture aims to rekindle cultural interest in Tokunoshima. It offers a unique opportunity to (re)discover the sea, fostering intergenerational ties and reaffirming the importance of the ocean in the continuity of life.

An ode to the nurturing sea
Inspired by the universal myth of Gaia, the original mother, the work questions the place of the ocean as a source, consciousness, and crucible of all life. It delivers a powerful message about the interdependence between humans and the marine world, encouraging divers and visitors to respect, understand, and preserve this fragile ecosystem.
Ocean Gaia invites a deep sensory experience, a silent meditation on creation, motherhood, and the ocean as a universal matrix. Dive after dive, it promises to evoke unique emotions, reminding each of us of the ancestral memory of being carried by water, this unbreakable bond with the living.
