Rodrigues, the Beautiful Forgotten of the Mascarenes

A small island of 108 km² north of Mauritius, Rodrigues is a true oasis of greenery in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Small island of 108 km² north of Mauritius, Rodrigues is a true oasis of greenery in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The area, pristine and protected, is a sanctuary for tropical birds and has within its waters a perfectly preserved coral reef, enclosing a gigantic lagoon.1 – A vast lagoon: the particularity of Rodrigues is the size of its lagoon, twice as large as the landmass. Its shallow turquoise waters spanning 300 km² are dotted with small islets such as Île-aux-Coco or Île aux Sables to the west, protected nature reserves.

2 – A protective isolation: Rodrigues has always been much less frequented than its big sister, Mauritius. This isolation, combined with fishing restrictions, offers divers the sumptuous spectacle of corals in excellent health: 260 virgin and intact species, acropora tables, porous coral…3 – Extraordinary underwater reliefs: the volcanic nature of the island and its seabed is the origin of many tunnels, faults, caves, and canyons. Do not miss the impressive site of the Basilica: a labyrinth of galleries illuminated by a few rays of light.4 – A very diverse fauna: in the heart of the coral reef, you’ll encounter clownfish, damselfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, green turtles, and many other tropical fish. In open water, tunas, barracudas, and batfish will accompany you. From October to December, humpback whales can be seen offshore.5 – Drift dives : it is possible to dive in the various passes allowing access to the lagoon (passe Saint-François, the Great Pass). The current is strong, and the dives are drift dives. You can observe bigeye trevallies, groupers, or ghost pipefish.6 – Calmer dives : northeast of the island, natural and shallow pools (15 meters maximum) have formed inside the lagoon. In crystal-clear and perfectly calm water, dive or practice snorkeling.7 – Exploring new sites: several centers offer to dive on unlisted sites or even to explore places never approached by man: an unforgettable experience.8 – A paradise of greenery: choose to walk on this small green island. Climb to the summit of the very accessible Mont Limon, at 398 meters altitude, to enjoy a remarkable view of the lagoon. Observe the birds of Île-aux-Cocos and Île aux Sables or visit the 5-senses botanical garden and its endemic plants.

9 – A lively life: although the island is modest in size and its inhabitants are few, a festive atmosphere prevails: between the excitement of the capital Port-Mathurin and the many festivals to the rhythms of drums and accordions, the sense of change continues after diving.10 – Spicy flavors: the cuisine of Rodrigues is characterized by a subtle blend of spices and fresh products: local chicken with ginger and turmeric, mango pepper, papaya pepper… to finish your meal well, indulge in a frozen papaya or a traditional corn pudding.Practical: time difference: +2 hours in summer, +3 hours in winter – currency: Mauritian rupee (1 € = 40 rs) – water temperature: 26 °C on average – best season to dive: October to December – equipment: 3 mm wetsuit – diving level: beginner to advanced.
